Johnnie High's Country Music Revue

The President of Wolf Chili, Johnnie High, Ernest Tubb
Ernest Tubb had mentioned to Johnnie that his favorite meal was a bologna sandwich and Wolf brand chili, a product that originated in Texas near Ernest's birthplace.  When Johnnie booked Ernest to perform on the CMR he surprised the beloved Texas Troubadour by inviting the president of Wolf Chili to present Ernest with a case of chili on the CMR stage

Box Car Willie & Jess Hudson
Box would go on to superstardom in Europe and later buy a theater in Branson Missouri. But he still had a "day job" when this photo was taken. He is pictured here with Jess Hudson, a talented and accomplished musician who performed with Box on the road for many years.

Dale McBride was one of the most telented performers ever, Johnnie said recently. Dale was a guest many times on the CMR

Grammy winner and Country Music Hall of Fame member, Merle Travis was so good at so many things he made it all look easy. An innovative guitarist whose style continues to influence musicians today, he was a singer, song writer, designer, actor, and author. Dark as a Dungeon and Sixteen Tons are probably the most remembered songs he wrote. He also had a role in the movie classic, From Here to Eternity, where he sang one of his compositions, Re-Enlistment Blues.

Johnnie High has been a part of the Texas music scene since he was barely into his teens in Waco Texas in the 1940's. For more than 30 years now, his Country Music Revue has been an important factor in the musical landscape of central Texas. The show has become a tradition respected across the US, drawing fans from all over the world. His stage has been a proving ground for some of today's brightest stars.

Steve Holy's newest single Brand New Girlfriend, on the Curb label, is racing up the country music charts nationwide. Steve is on the road touring most of the time now but when he is "home" in Texas you can often find him popping in for an unscheduled song or two on the CMR stage.

A group of music businessmen from Nashville attended a CMR show recently. They kept looking at each in amazement everytime a performer left the stage. "That woman can really sing," one would say and the other would nod agreement. "Whooee, that guy really nailed that song," another would say. These were men who have been in the music business for 20 or 30 years, and they obviously did not expect to be that excited over a show that usually doesn't have "name" performers. But this is not an unusual response to the show. High hears this all the time from people who are attending for the first-time.
